Katrina’s DevDays 2024 Experience

Jun 21, 2024 | FHIR

This is the first of a three-part series as our Research and Develop team discusses their experiences at the DevDays 2024 Conference held in Minneapolis, MN, last weekend! Each member attended different sessions throughout the week and took away valuable information that GigaTECH will immediately be able to introduce into their workflow! First up is Katrina Aquino, Software Engineer, and her takeaways from a fantastic event:

As part of the GigaTECH Research & Development team, I had the incredible opportunity to attend this year’s DevDays. Throughout the four-day event, I participated in a wide range of lectures and hands-on sessions and engaged with fellow FHIR enthusiasts and experts. This exciting and educational event deepened my understanding of FHIR and exposed me to the innovative solutions our community is developing within healthcare interoperability.

I was looking forward to attending a series of lectures on Structured Data Capture, an infrastructure for collecting, exchanging, and using patient data. GigaTECH is currently exploring using Questionnaires to collect patient data and utilizing FHIRPath, a path-based navigation and extraction language, to pre-populate Questionnaires with data from an Electronic Health Record. These sessions provided a useful review of information and a great source for new tools for development, testing, and validation.

I also participated in a session about implementing interactive Clinical Decision Support (CDS). GigaTECH implements CDS in some of our FHIR integration solutions, and I was excited to hear how the presenters utilized a pre-populated Questionnaire to prompt for missing clinical information required for CDS evaluation. I look forward to exploring how GigaTECH can take a similar approach to improving our CDS solutions.

Another highlight from this year’s event was a thought-provoking panel on Artificial Intelligence and how its growing accessibility to patients can increase their understanding of their health and medical records. I’m particularly interested in how AI will affect the more collaborative relationship between patients and providers when creating plans of care.

Overall, I had a fantastic time at DevDays. I think the presentations provided valuable insights into implementing FHIR solutions to interoperability challenges in healthcare. I was glad to experience the enthusiasm and friendliness of the FHIR community. I look forward to learning and connecting at the next conference!
